PPL vs CPL: Which Licence Do You Need?
A plain-language guide to the difference between a Private and a Commercial Pilot Licence, and how one leads to the other.

Most professional pilots start with the same question: should I train for a Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or go straight for a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)? The answer depends on your goals.
The Private Pilot Licence
A PPL lets you fly an aircraft privately, without being paid. It covers the fundamentals — handling, navigation, radio communication and solo flight — and forms the foundation for further training.
The Commercial Pilot Licence
A CPL allows you to be paid to fly. It requires more flight hours, additional theory examinations and higher standards in the skill test. Airline careers usually need a CPL plus further ratings and training.
Choosing your route
If your aim is a flying career, plan the full pathway from the start: medical, theory examinations, PPL, CPL and ratings. Requirements vary by licensing authority, so check what applies to you before you begin.
