A320 and B737 Type Rating Information

What Is an Initial Type Rating?

Why airline pilots need a type rating, and what ground and simulator training typically involve.

Pilots in an airliner flight deck

A type rating qualifies a licensed pilot to fly a specific aircraft type, such as the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737. It's a key step between a commercial licence and the airline flight deck.

Ground training

Ground training covers aircraft systems, procedures, multi-crew cooperation and examination preparation.

Simulator training

Simulator sessions progress from fixed-base devices to full-flight simulators, building up to checks of normal and abnormal procedures.

Before you enrol

Check the entry requirements carefully: licence, instrument rating, medical and English proficiency. Holding a type rating does not by itself guarantee airline employment.
